The evidence and property unit receives, stores, secures and accounts for evidence and property recovered by officers and investigators during daily field operations.  Property may be released by the approval of the collecting officer, the prosecuting attorney, or by court order.  No evidence or property will be released which is prohibited by Georgia or Federal Law.

To inquire about the release of property, the individual should contact the collecting officer or the evidence custodian during normal business hours.  If the evidence has been authorized for release by the collecting officer or court, the owner should call the evidence/property office to make an appointment for pick up.  The owner must come in person to retrieve the items or complete a notarized letter stating who they would like to pick up the items.  Our office is at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center and a picture I.D. will be required at pick up.  Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8AM to 4PM.

The Cherokee Adult Detention Center houses inmates from many jurisdictions within the county. Our Evidence & Property Unit only retains evidence from cases that are from the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office.  Other jurisdictions (i.e. Woodstock P.D., Canton P.D., etc.) have their own evidence/property departments.
