Deputy Sheriff Dana D. Shaw
DOB: 6-9-68 Date Appointed: 7-28-97 End of Watch: 8-8-99 Traffic came to a halt on Main Street in Canton on Tuesday, August 10, 1999 as the coffin carrying Deputy Sheriff Dana Denise Shaw was placed in the hearse while “Amazing Grace” was played by the police bagpipe unit. More than 600 officer’s from around the State of Georgia came to pay their last respects to a fellow officer. Roger Garrison, Sheriff of Cherokee county said “Dana loved life, loved her children and loved being a Deputy Sheriff for Cherokee County. Deputy Shaw was known as “feisty and a firecracker” While she was only 5 feet two inches tall and weighed 90 pounds she had earned the respect of fellow officers by balancing a “tough side” with heart and compassion. Deputy Shaw earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Criminal Justice from Kennesaw State University in 1995. Her career with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office began in May, 1996 as a 911 Communications Officer. She was transferred to the Adult Detention Center in July, 1997 as an uncertified Deputy Sheriff and became Law Enforcement certified in January 1998. Dana was then transferred to the Uniform Patrol Division in December, 1998 where she was assigned to the West Precinct and then assigned to the East precinct in March of 1999. Deputy Shaw was killed while on duty in a single car accident on E. Cherokee Drive, in Woodstock, GA, August 8, 1999. Deputy Shaw is survived by son – Jeremy Dean, daughter – Kayleigh Shaw, sister – Danita Dean, father and step-mother Dale and Angie Dean, grandparents – Glen and Betty Neal, grandmother – Alma Dean and nieces and nephews. |
